阿波徳島の海部師久を祖とする海部鍛冶は銘鑑によると鎌倉末期より始まると言われ、現存が確認出来るのは応永頃からで、その後幕末ま栄えました。
江戸時代には蜂須賀家のお抱え鍛冶として徳島城下で鍛刀しました。
一般的に荒れた頑丈な作品が多く切れ味がよいとされ瀬戸内海の海賊などが好んで保有したと言われている。
かなり良くできた作品も多く、特に時代が下がると出来の良い作品が多くなります。
