新々刀期の上作鍛冶として名高い備前長船祐永は名を『横山覚之助』、横山祐平の次男として寛政六年(1794)に生まれた。
兄の祐盛が後七兵衛祐定の養子となったため、父『祐平』の名跡を継ぎ備前藩工を勤めた。友成五十六代孫と称し天保四年に加賀介を受領。
十六葉『菊紋』および『一』文字を茎に切ることを許された。
嘉永四年六月二日没行年五十七歳。
本作はは祐永三十五歳の壮年作。
