波平一派は、古伝書によると、平安後期、大和から薩摩国谷山郡波平の地に移住したと伝わる正国を祖として、江戸末期まで千年余り続く一大流派です。
古波平とは南北朝期を下らない一派の刀工およびその作刀は大和物に近似するが、それに比しては地刃の沸が微細で、地がねがネットリとして軟らかに感じられ、匂口も弱くうるみごころがあり、区際を焼落とすなどに特色がある。
