兼嗣刀匠は、赤松太郎一門の祖である兼重刀匠の長男として、昭和二十六年に生まれました。
木村家は人吉藩に仕えた抱鍛冶の家柄であり、その伝法は木村兼重刀匠から代々子へと受け継がれてきました。

長男が赤松太郎兼嗣刀匠（木村兼定）、次男が赤松太郎兼照刀匠（木村兼弘）、三男が赤松太郎兼裕刀匠（木村馨）であり、いずれもその技を継承しています。

現在の木村家は、源清麿や直胤を理想とした豪壮な作風で名高く、「赤松太郎」を号してまさに刀一筋の一家として知られ、ご子息いずれも著名な刀匠として活躍されています。
