『兼元』は『兼定』とならび美濃鍛冶を代表する鍛冶で伊勢の『村正』とならび市中ででもっとも親しまれた刀工である。
同工は寛政九年(1797）に刊行された「懐宝剣尺」で「最上大業物」に指定され、天下無双の切れ味を誇る逸品との風説が広まった。
室町時代、古刀期の『兼元』の名は同銘数代続き、今日では技倆もっとも優れた二代を指して『孫六兼元』と汎称している。初代の兼元は文明から永正ごろとされ、三本杉風の刃文は希有で、所詮三本杉状の互の目を創始したのは二代の兼元である。
新刀期の『兼元』の名跡は、奈良派と得印派に受け継がれており、奈良派の『田代源一兼元』は『兼常』一門に合流して幕末頃まで作刀し、得印派の『金子孫六』は寛永頃（～1643)の孫六四代まで鍛冶職が継承された。
会津最期の名工、会津兼定十一代は初銘『兼元』を名乗り、十六歳で会津藩の御用を勤めて文久三年十二月(1863)に『和泉守』を受領、『兼定』と改銘している。

本作は兼元（新々刀）と保存刀剣で鑑定された。幕末の新々刀の兼元は会津11代和泉守兼定か11代の弟子の兼元しか現存していないようです。
