室町時代後期に活動した備前長船鍛冶の刀工たちは、総じて「末備前」と呼ばれます。中でも祐定一派は、その技量と作品の優秀さから特に名声を高め、後世に至るまで長く繁栄を続けました。銘鑑には、俗名を冠した刀工として与三左衛門尉、源兵衛尉、彦兵衛尉祐定らを筆頭に、20名以上の名が記録されています。

本作を手掛けた源兵衛尉祐定は、与三左衛門尉祐定の子と伝えられ、その家督を継いで備前・天神山城主である浦上家に仕え、刀を鍛えました。銘文には「備前国住長船源兵衛尉祐定作」「備前国住長船祐定作」などがあり、作風としては互の目丁子や足の入った直刃を得意としています。
