備州長船横山祐包は、備前長船祐定の十三代を継承し、古刀期の名工・友成の五十八代後裔にあたる刀工であり、天保五年（1834）頃より明治五年（1872）頃にかけての作刀が現存します。幕末備前鍛冶を代表する一人として高く評価されています。

本作は、地鉄は小板目肌がよく練れて詰み、地沸がつくなど、精緻かつ力強い鍛えが見て取れます。刃文は匂出来の華やかな菊花丁子刃を焼き、足がよく入り、匂口は明るく冴え渡るなど、新々刀期の備前伝と横山祐包の作風を遺憾なく発揮した優品です。
