義植は越前下坂一派の業物刀工。戦国時代末期ごろに近江国下坂から越前へ移住した刀工群を下坂派と呼び、その代表的な刀工が越前康継で徳川家康の次男秀康のお抱え鍛冶となった。越前では下坂系以外にも山城堀川系の国清、三条吉則末裔の正則など、高名な刀工を多く輩出している。
丹波守藤原吉房は江戸時代延宝頃（1673年）の越前福井の刀匠です。当時は江戸に長曽祢興里虎鉄、大坂に津田越前守助廣や井上真改が大活躍していた同じ時代の刀工です。
