平安城（山城国）式真鍮象嵌鍔は、応仁鍔の技法の流れを汲むもので、応仁鍔よりさらに精巧で装飾性が増しているのが特徴である。
平安城式真鍮象嵌鍔の製作された年代は、室町時代末期から江戸時代前期にかけてであり、初期の作品は丸形の鉄地に、唐草・家紋などの図案を、真鍮のみを使って鍔全面に据文象嵌するものばかりであった。
しかし、時代が下がると、形は丸形のみでなく木瓜形・撫角形など多様となり、象嵌に用いる金属は真鍮以外に金・銀・銅・赤銅などが加わった。
また、象嵌の手法も据文式のみならず、平象嵌様式も用いられるようになった。
