備州長船則光の初代は長光の門人と伝えられ、嘉元三年紀の短刀が現存しており、その存在を物語っています。銘鑑によると、これを初代とし、二代は延文頃、三代は応永頃、四代は永享頃、五代は長禄から寛正、六代は応仁から文明にかけて活躍したとされています。その後も、室町末期に至るまで十数代にわたり「則光」の銘が継承されました。

本作の則光は、年紀から六代にあたると考えられます。
六代則光は四代と並ぶ名工と評され、重刀指定を受けた優品も遺しています。
